New Fund Requirements Now Apply for Study Permits

Starting September 1, 2025, international students applying for a Canadian study permit must show an additional $2,260 CAD, bringing the total required funds to $22,895 CAD for a single applicant.

This update applies to all study permit applications submitted on or after September 1, 2025. The proof of funds requirement increases based on the number of family members accompanying the student, meaning some applicants will need to show significantly higher amounts. These funds are separate from tuition and transportation costs.

What You Need to Know About the New Fund Requirements

Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) requires students to show how they will pay tuition at their Designated Learning Institution (DLI) in addition to meeting the proof of funds requirement.

Number of family members New fund requirement (Sept 1, 2025, onward) Change from previous requirement

$60,589 +$5,978
Each additional member $6,170 +$611

For Quebec Students
Students planning to study in Quebec must first obtain a Quebec Acceptance Certificate (CAQ) before applying to IRCC. Unlike other provinces, Quebec runs its own immigration system. Therefore, students must provide proof of funds both to the Quebec Ministère de l’Immigration, de la Francisation et de l’Intégration (MIFI) and IRCC, though the same funds can be used for both.

To get a CAQ, students must show they can cover:

  • Tuition fees
  • Enrollment costs required by their DLI
  • Transportation and round-trip travel costs
  • Living expenses
  • Settlement funds for one year (currently $500 CAD for 2025)
  • Health and health insurance costs (can be waived if covered by Quebec or a social security agreement)

Living expense is shown below:

Family Composition Funds Required (CAN$)
One person under the age of 18 – principal applicant $7,756
One person aged 18 and over $15,508
Two people aged 18 and over $22,745
Two people aged 18 and over and one person under 18 $25,479
Two people aged 18 and over and two people under 18 $27,499

How to Show Proof of Funds

IRCC requires international students to submit supporting documents proving they meet financial requirements. Acceptable documents include:

  • Proof of tuition and housing payments: Receipts showing tuition and accommodation fees already paid; for multi-year programs, at least the first year must be paid with evidence of funds for living and travel.
  • Canadian bank account: Evidence of funds deposited in a Canadian bank.
  • Guaranteed Investment Certificate (GIC).
  • Student or education loan: Approved loan documents from a recognized bank.
  • Bank statements: Covering the past four months from Canadian or foreign accounts.
  • Bank draft: In Canadian dollars or convertible currency.
  • Letter of financial support: From an individual or institution, with supporting proof.
  • Scholarships or Canadian-funded program support: Documentation confirming financial assistance.

This list is not exhaustive, and IRCC may request additional documents depending on the student’s country or personal circumstances. Students should also check local visa office instructions and, if from countries with foreign exchange controls, provide proof that they are allowed to transfer sufficient funds to Canada.
