New Intake Opening Announced by Canada for Parents and Grandparents Program

Good news for Canadian citizens and permanent residents: some will soon get a chance to sponsor their parents or grandparents for permanent residency in Canada.

Starting July 28, 2025, the federal government will begin sending out invitations to potential sponsors. Over the course of two weeks, a total of 17,860 invitations will be issued. The goal is to accept 10,000 fully completed sponsorship applications this year.

These invitations will only be sent to individuals who previously submitted an Interest to Sponsor form back in 2020. There will be no new intake forms at this time.

For those who do not receive an invitation, there’s still another route available: the Super Visa program, which allows parents or grandparents to stay in Canada as visitors for up to 10 years.

About the Parents and Grandparents Program (PGP)

The Parents and Grandparents Program (PGP) is part of Canada’s family reunification efforts. Through this program, eligible Canadian citizens, permanent residents, and registered Indians can sponsor their parents or grandparents for permanent residence.

Because more people are interested in the program than the number of available spots, the government uses a random selection (lottery) system to choose who gets invited to apply.

Only those who receive an invitation can move forward with the sponsorship process. The last time the government accepted new Interest to Sponsor forms was in 2020, and the upcoming invitations will be sent to individuals from that pool only.

About the Super Visa

The Super Visa offers another option for family reunification. This visa allows parents and grandparents of Canadian citizens and permanent residents to visit and stay in Canada long-term for up to 10 years.

Unlike a regular visitor visa, which allows a stay of up to six months, the Super Visa is valid for much longer. To be eligible:

  • The applicant must buy qualifying health insurance.
  • They must also be admissible to Canada.
  • The host (the Canadian resident or citizen) must commit to financially supporting the visitor during their stay.
  • The host must also meet minimum income requirements.

This latest intake is a continued effort by the Canadian government to help families reunite and spend more time together whether through permanent immigration or long-term visits.
