Why Canada Uses the CRS to Select Immigrants
The Comprehensive Ranking System (CRS) is a key component of Canada’s Express Entry system. It helps identify skilled workers who are best positioned to succeed in the Canadian job market.
The CRS evaluates candidates based on factors such as age, education, language proficiency, and work experience. This evidence-based approach has been developed from decades of Canadian research on how immigrants perform in the workforce. Findings consistently show that younger individuals with higher education levels, strong language skills, and relevant work experience tend to integrate more successfully into Canada’s economy.
Supporting this approach, a 2020 IRCC report examined the performance of Express Entry immigrants since the system’s launch in 2015. The report revealed that Express Entry newcomers have high employment rates, solid earnings, and low unemployment levels demonstrating the effectiveness of the CRS in selecting top talent.
